UPDATED: Mitt Romney got 20 fewer votes in Moulton precinct, Appanoose County GOP chairman says

NOTE: An earlier version of this blog incorrectly reported which numbers Appanoose County GOP chairman Lyle Brinegar believes are accurate. The numbers he referenced as accurate earlier today are those sworn in the affidavit by Moulton resident Edward True.

Mitt Romney received 20 fewer votes than are reported from a Moulton precinct in numbers posted by the Republican Party of Iowa, the Appanoose County GOP chairman said today.

The final vote between Iowa caucuses winner Mitt Romney was eight ahead of Rick Santorum.

?We stand by the figures that were presented by the Moulton precinct caucus,? said Lyle Brinegar, chairman of the Appanoose County GOP.

Matt Strawn, chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa, continued to express confidence Friday that the order of finish will not change. He said the party would make no further comment until its two-week vote certification process is complete.

Moulton resident Edward True has signed an affidavit saying that he helped count the vote at the Garrett Memorial Library in Moulton and that the precinct had two votes for Romney, not 22, as reported online by the state GOP.

Brinegar says True is correct.

?I?m not disputing what Ed True said,? Brinegar said.

Appanoose County has 12 caucus precincts. All but two had no votes or single-digit votes for Romney, while one had 20 votes and the Moulton site reported 22.

Drake University political science professor Dennis Goldford said the results ? even if the certification reveals a different answer ? will change little other than bragging rights.

Santorum, who for months remained in the single digits in polls, wildly beat expectations, and that is the real story, Goldford said. The caucuses don?t result in an actual election, so there?s no additional harm done in terms of having to eject a candidate from a position, Goldford noted.

However, there is potential for long-term consequences regarding the credibility of the Iowa caucuses, Goldford warned.

?It reinforces the view from other states that the Iowa caucuses are this unreliable, amateurish event,? Goldford said.

India crude oil under pressure on global supply concerns

Last Updated : January 06, 2012 14:10

Crude oil futures traded lower or in the tight range to settled flat to weak down by -0.35% at 5443 on climbing US supplies despite Iranian supply disruption worries.

Dollar strength generally depresses commodity prices, as it decreases their appeal as an alternative asset and makes dollar priced commodities more expensive for holders of other currencies.

The US EIA reported that US Crude Oil inventories climbed by 2.2mbls in the week ended Dec 30th, crushing estimates for a 1.2mbl decline. Meanwhile, the euro zone has agreed on principle to begin an oil embargo against Iran per a diplomat. However, the details of the potential embargo remain uncertain.

This fear added support to recent crude oil prices. France came into danger of losing its AAA credit rating after investors adding to euro zone crisis fears.

But losses were limited amid lingering concerns over a supply disruption concerns as a result of escalating tensions between Iran and the West. A EU diplomat said that EU countries had agreed on principle to launch an oil embargo on Iran, but discussion were to continue over details such as timing and implementation.

Now technically market is trading in the range as RSI for 18days is currently indicating 63.48, where as 50DMA is at 5163 and crude is trading above the same and getting support at 5408 and below could see a test of 5374 level, And resistance is now likely to be seen at 5471, a move above could see prices testing 5500.

Trading Ideas:

Crude trading range is 5374-5500.

Crude oil held on to losses after government data showed crude supplies rose unexpectedly last week.

Crude prices came under additional pressure as concerns over the euro zone?s debt crisis lingered.

Unemployment depends on college major

The unemployment rate among recent grads with a Bachelor's Degree is 8.9 percent.

Unemployment rates among recent college graduates vary greatly, and, at least in part, depend on what degree students have, according to a study from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce.

Overall, the unemployment rate among recent grads with a Bachelor's Degree is 8.9 percent.

Students who majored in Architecture have the highest unemployment rates, at 13.9 percent, due to the collapse of the construction and home-building industry, the report says.

Unemployment is the lowest among recent grades with degrees in engineering, the sciences, education and healthcare, at just 5.4 percent.

Unemployment rates go down significantly for students with graduate degrees, at just 3 percent.

'Nanowiggles:' Scientists discover graphene nanomaterials with tunable functionality in electronics

'Nanowiggles:' Scientists discover graphene nanomaterials with tunable functionality in electronics

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Electronics are getting smaller and smaller, flirting with new devices at the atomic scale. However, many scientists predict that the shrinking of our technology is reaching an end. Without an alternative to silicon-based technologies, the miniaturization of our electronics will stop. One promising alternative is graphene ? the thinnest material known to man. Pure graphene is not a semiconductor, but it can be altered to display exceptional electrical behavior. Finding the best graphene-based nanomaterials could usher in a new era of nanoelectronics, optics, and spintronics (an emerging technology that uses the spin of electrons to store and process information in exceptionally small electronics).

Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have used the capabilities of one of the world's most powerful university-based supercomputers, the Rensselaer Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI), to uncover the properties of a promising form of graphene, known as graphene nanowiggles. What they found was that graphitic nanoribbons can be segmented into several different surface structures called nanowiggles. Each of these structures produces highly different magnetic and conductive properties. The findings provide a blueprint that scientists can use to literally pick and choose a graphene nanostructure that is tuned and customized for a different task or device. The work provides an important base of knowledge on these highly useful nanomaterials.

The findings were published in the journal Physical Review Lettersin a paper titled "Emergence of Atypical Properties in Assembled Graphene Nanoribbons."

"Graphene nanomaterials have plenty of nice properties, but to date it has been very difficult to build defect-free graphene nanostructures. So these hard-to-reproduce nanostructures created a near insurmountable barrier between innovation and the market," said Vincent Meunier, the Gail and Jeffrey L. Kodosky '70 Constellation Professor of Physics, Information Technology, and Entrepreneurship at Rensselaer. "The advantage of graphene nanowiggles is that they can easily and quickly be produced very long and clean." Nanowiggles were only recently discovered by a group led by scientists at EMPA, Switzerland. These particular nanoribbons are formed using a bottom-up approach, since they are chemically assembled atom by atom. This represents a very different approach to the standard graphene material design process that takes an existing material and attempts to cut it into a new structure. The process often creates a material that is not perfectly straight, but has small zigzags on its edges.

Meunier and his research team saw the potential of this new material. The nanowiggles could be easily manufactured and modified to display exceptional electrical conductive properties. Meunier and his team immediately set to work to dissect the nanowiggles to better understand possible future applications.

"What we found in our analysis of the nanowiggles' properties was even more surprising than previously thought," Meunier said.

The scientists used computational analysis to study several different nanowiggle structures. The structures are named based on the shape of their edges and include armchair, armchair/zigzag, zigzag, and zigzag/armchair. All of the nanoribbon-edge structures have a wiggly appearance like a caterpillar inching across a leaf. Meunier named the four structures nanowiggles and each wiggle produced exceptionally different properties.

They found that the different nanowiggles produced highly varied band gaps. A band gap determines the levels of electrical conductivity of a solid material. They also found that different nanowiggles exhibited up to five highly varied magnetic properties. With this knowledge, scientists will be able to tune the bandgap and magnetic properties of a nanostructure based on their application, according to Meunier.

Meunier would like the research to inform the design of new and better devices. "We have created a roadmap that can allow for nanomaterials to be easily built and customized for applications from photovoltaics to semiconductors and, importantly, spintronics," he said.

By using CCNI, Meunier was able to complete these sophisticated calculations in a few months.

"Without CCNI, these calculations would still be continuing a year later and we would not yet have made this exciting discovery. Clearly this research is an excellent example illustrating the key role of CCNI in predictive fundamental science," he said.

Video: Obama campaign uses Iowa for training

>>> at the white house from his vacation in hawaii. the president will host a live web chat at 8:15 eastern time with democratic caucus goers. the president's reelection team on the ground plans to treating the caucus as if it were uncontested. the magazine senior writer andrew romano wrote an article about the president's reelection machine headquartered in chicago. thanks for joining us.

>> thanks for having me.

>> in iowa alone, the president paid staff members eight offices and a dozen staffers and humans of volunteers. that's just part of the list of thing thaus named that is happening alone in iowa .

>> we have all paid attention and the obama campaign has put together a ground operation that will dwarf what it did in 2008 and that was the most impressive that anyone had seen. iowa is the first test that was. they will treat the caucuses like they are contested and go out and talk to supporters and has the general election campaign.

>> the national committee circulated the video entitled failed promises, iowa edition and uses the victory speech. we have the video to highlight what they say are his failures already. democrats and the obama team countering that same. we can outline the promises including health care to counter this. they are not ignoring what's happening there.

>> no, absolutely not. they want to come back hard and make the point that the president has kept a lot of promises. the republicans are fighting and talking about the president. they are attacking the president and the democrats, obama campaign in chicago wanted to make sure they are on the ground and can come back and say no, this is what the president has done. they can get the supporters organize and ready to go for the election.

>> speaking and getting ready to go for the election, we heard a lot of rumblings about mitt romney and axel rod and others focused on mitt romney . digs at newt gingrich . they are perhaps showing more confidence that he will get the nomination.

>> i would say that they expect romney to get the nomination at this point. they focused on him all along. i asked this question and why you guys focused on romney and do you think he will get the nomination. he said romney will be of the pop two no matter what. they focused on him from the beginning and also say that romney has been attacking obama instead of his republican rivals and they have got to come back and counter that. they do i think believe romney is the likliest person and will be the most difficult for them to face.

>> we know that the president was successful in really getting people to believe in change. this time around, what do we believe will be the moniker here and what will we hear resonate with the people and the supporters of this administration and the reelection campaign.

>> the reelection campaign knows this will be a more difficult race as david axel rod put it to me. they have straight head winds and this time the conditions are difficult and unemployment is the challenge. you are going to see a little bit less yes we can and more no, we shouldn't. you are going to see a little bit more going after the republicans, saying why their vision for the country is not right and contrasting that with the president's. as they put it, it's going to be a vigorous debate.

>> later, we will talk about super packs and the impact the supreme court decision had not just in iowa , but moving ahead. we know early on this was expected to be at least a $1 billion campaign for president obama in the reelection.

>> that's right. the numbers are going to come out soon for the fourth quarter. they are probably going to show that obama has raised with the dnc about $200 million in 2011 alone. 2012 upon raising hasn't even begun. that figure, the campaign disputes it, but analysts expects the numbers. you will see a lot of numbers comes from the super packs. around $250 million. it will be the most well funded campaign we will see.

>> you have incredible inside in your article and we appreciate

Second Test: India elect to bat against AustraliaIndian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat against Australia in the second Test of the four-match series at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir's poor run continued as he got out for a duck in the first over of the innings on the first day of the second Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Scorecard

The lanky pacer James Pattinson gave Australia early breakthrough when he claimed Gambhir's wicket. The southpaw was beaten by the extra bounce and movement that took the thick outside edge to skipper Michael Clarke at first slip.

Earlier, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat against Australia.

India have retained the same playing eleven while the hosts have also decided to field the same team that did duty in Melbourne, which means Nathan Lyon will get another opportunity to prove his worth.

Australia's bowling attack of James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus will be keen to bowl at the Indian top order in the bright sunshine while the green tinge remains on the wicket.

India would aim to draw level as their fine past record at the SCG, which will incidentally host its 100th Test, should give the Indians the confidence that was dented by the thrashing at Melbourne.

The 122-run loss in the opening Test in Melbourne was demoralising but the Indians have a reputation of being bad starters on tours before bouncing back.

And India would be aiming for another one of those turnarounds at the SCG, hoping that veteran Sachin Tendulkar gets his eagerly-anticipated but elusive 100th international century to lead the way.

Australia doesn't intend to depart from the tested theory of aggressive bowling in seaming, helpful bowling conditions which served England so brilliantly this summer and is likely to yield rich dividends to Michael Clarke's men this time around.

The pitch at the SCG these days is vastly different from its traditional sub-continent like surface. Spinners have taken only 12 of the 57 wickets in domestic competition at the SCG this summer.

Teams:

India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav.

Australia: David Warner, Ed Cowan, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (captain), Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Lyon.

Umpires: Marais Erasmus (South Africa) and Ian Gould (England)

Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle ( Sri Lanka)
