Thu, 25 Oct 2012 21:53:17 -0700 Bisnar | Chase: Motorcycle Mentorship Program Promotes Fun Responsible Riding http://tocyekly.posterous.com/bisnar-chase-motorcycle-mentorship-program-pr http://tocyekly.posterous.com/bisnar-chase-motorcycle-mentorship-program-pr

California motorcycle accident lawyer welcomes the establishment of more groups like the Coyote Motorcycle Mentorship Program, which aims to create a supportive environment of responsible and enjoyable motorcycle riding for less experienced drivers. According to an Oct. 10 news report in the Blackanthem Military News, the program does so by bringing experienced and novice riders together.

Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2012

With temperatures dropping quickly and sharply in North Dakota, the "Coyotes" of Division West's 5th Armored Brigade are considering putting their motorcycles into so-called winter hibernation, an Oct. 10 news report in the Blackanthem Military News states. While doing so, the soldier bikers of the brigade's 2nd Battalion 361st Combat Support Regiment completed a motorcycle safety rider for the quarter as part of their unit's Motorcycle Mentorship Program, the report states.

According to the article, the program establishes voluntary installation-level motorcycle clubs in which seasoned riders and novice riders can create a support system that encourages safety and fun. The program, for example, includes classes that educate riders about pre-ride checklists such as checking tires, wheels, cables, lights, oil and fluids. The group even partners with civilian businesses to provide safety training, the report states.

It is heartening to see this unit's focus and commitment to safe motorcycle riding, says John Bisnar, founder of the Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm. "The idea of grouping experienced and inexperienced riders is a great idea. Not only can they learn from each other, but a group such as this reinforces the importance of safety among all riders while keeping a fun atmosphere going."

Recent studies conducted by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center document sharp increases in the numbers and rates of motorcycle fatalities among service members, according to a July 6, 2009 report in the Army Times. The number of service members injured and hospitalized in motorcycle accidents increased by more than 100 from 2007 to 2008 and deaths increase by 18 over the same period, the report states. According to the report, these numbers have only increased since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with mental health workers expressing concerns that service members on motorcycles may be seeking to recapture the rush of war while taking more risks.

Organizations such as the Coyotes within the military and programs such as the Motorcycle Mentorship Program can certainly help keep our off-duty service members safe, Bisnar says. "These service members need all the support and training they need to ensure that they are safe while enjoying what can be an enjoyable and exhilarating hobby.?

Thu, 25 Oct 2012 20:00:47 -0700 84 million stars and counting http://tocyekly.posterous.com/84-million-stars-and-counting http://tocyekly.posterous.com/84-million-stars-and-counting Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Using a whopping nine-gigapixel image from the VISTA infrared survey telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, an international team of astronomers has created a catalogue of more than 84 million stars in the central parts of the Milky Way. This gigantic dataset contains more than ten times more stars than previous studies and is a major step forward for the understanding of our home galaxy. The image gives viewers an incredible, zoomable view of the central part of our galaxy. It is so large that, if printed with the resolution of a typical book, it would be 9 metres long and 7 metres tall.

"By observing in detail the myriads of stars surrounding the centre of the Milky Way we can learn a lot more about the formation and evolution of not only our galaxy, but also spiral galaxies in general," explains Roberto Saito (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Universidad de Valparaiso and The Milky Way Millennium Nucleus, Chile), lead author of the study.

Most spiral galaxies, including our home galaxy the Milky Way, have a large concentration of ancient stars surrounding the centre that astronomers call the bulge. Understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way's bulge is vital for understanding the galaxy is a whole. However, obtaining detailed observations of this region is not an easy task.

"Observations of the bulge of the Milky Way are very hard because it is obscured by dust," says Dante Minniti (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile), co-author of the study. "To peer into the heart of the galaxy, we need to observe in infrared light, which is less affected by the dust."

The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO's 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV), one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created.

To help analyse this huge catalogue the brightness of each star is plotted against its colour for about 84 million stars to create a colour-magnitude diagram. This plot contains more than ten times more stars than any previous study and it is the first time that this has been done for the entire bulge. Colour-magnitude diagrams are very valuable tools that are often used by astronomers to study the different physical properties of stars such as their temperatures, masses and ages.

"Each star occupies a particular spot in this diagram at any moment during its lifetime. Where it falls depends on how bright it is and how hot it is. Since the new data gives us a snapshot of all the stars in one go, we can now make a census of all the stars in this part of the Milky Way," explains Dante Minniti.

The new colour-magnitude diagram of the bulge contains a treasure trove of information about the structure and content of the Milky Way. One interesting result revealed in the new data is the large number of faint red dwarf stars. These are prime candidates around which to search for small exoplanets using the transit method.

"One of the other great things about the VVV survey is that it's one of the ESO VISTA public surveys. This means that we're making all the data publicly available through the ESO data archive, so we expect many other exciting results to come out of this great resource," concludes Roberto Saito.

Thu, 25 Oct 2012 16:03:58 -0700 ACC Football 2012: Atlantic Division Or Coastal Division? http://tocyekly.posterous.com/acc-football-2012-atlantic-division-or-coasta http://tocyekly.posterous.com/acc-football-2012-atlantic-division-or-coasta

Boston College is 0-4 in the ACC for the second straight year. So let's talk about something that TOTALLY matters -- like ACC divisional schwartz comparisons.

Jeff: In years past, the ACC's Coastal Division has been considered the better division in the conference. The winner of the Coastal Division has won all but 3 ACC Championship Games and Virginia Tech has been a fixture in the top 25 with Georgia Tech making some regular appearance and North Carolina and Miami popping in and out. This year though, there are no Coastal teams in the top 25. Meanwhile, the Atlantic has Clemson and Florida State who shouldn't budge from the top 25 as the season plays out and NC State figures to be the next most likely ACC team to crack the top 25. The records tell the same story as the Atlantic Division is 3 games over .500 against the Coastal and BC is the only team in the Atlantic with a losing record. This year, how much better is the Atlantic than the Coastal?

Brian: The answer appears pretty straightforward this year but I don't think it's all that obvious. Like you said, the two best teams in the ACC sit atop the Atlantic Division in Florida State and Clemson. However, outside of FSU and Clemson, I don't think any other Atlantic Division team is better than the best Coastal Division team, which appears to be North Carolina at the moment. I say North Carolina is the best in the Coastal, despite the Heels' loss to Duke and earlier loss to Wake Forest. Carolina has already knocked off Miami and Virginia Tech, the next two best teams in the division.

After Carolina, I think N.C. State is slightly better than both Virginia Tech and Miami. But after that, the bottom falls out for the Atlantic Division -- and fairly significantly.

Georgia Tech is a better team right now than Maryland, Wake Forest and (obviously) Boston College. So is Duke for that matter. That leaves Virginia, which has been every bit as bad as Boston College this year but with a much easier schedule. Chances are good that UVa might not win another game this season, which is more than we can say about BC -- with winnable games left vs. Maryland (this weekend) and at Wake Forest.

Let's say BC and Virginia are a wash. FSU and Clemson are well above anyone from the Coastal, and the Coastal Division's best team at the moment is ineligible to play in the Championship Game. The Coastal Division is stronger in the middle, but I'm not sure that makes up for the lack of Top 25 teams and all the losses that have piled up already this season.

The Atlantic Division does have a slight edge at the moment, but I think it's closer than people think. The Sagarin rankings seem to bear out this trend, with the average Sagarin ranking of 60 in the Atlantic and 63 in the Coastal.

A good barometer will be this weekend, where N.C. State goes to North Carolina. As much as a bowl eligible Duke team is a feel-good story in the conference this year, the Blue Devils do go into this weekend's game against Florida State as a 27.5 point road dog. It's very possible that Duke winds up finishing with a losing record in conference play with games left at Florida State, Clemson, at Georgia Tech and Miami.

Sun, 21 Oct 2012 09:41:31 -0700 UN envoy presses for Syria cease-fire in Damascus http://tocyekly.posterous.com/un-envoy-presses-for-syria-cease-fire-in-dama http://tocyekly.posterous.com/un-envoy-presses-for-syria-cease-fire-in-dama

BEIRUT (AP) ? The international envoy to the Syria conflict pressed his call for a cease-fire with Syrian officials during a visit to Damascus on Saturday while violence continued throughout the country unabated.

Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, has appealed for a truce between rebels and President Bashar Assad's forces for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26. Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.

A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.

Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday and was expected to hold talks Assad on Sunday.

A Foreign Ministry statement released after Saturday's meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed "objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians."

Brahimi did not speak to reporters.

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.

Clashes flared around the country on Saturday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 40 civilians and rebel fighters killed as well as more than 20 government soldiers.

Anti-regime activist say more 33,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March 2011.

Tue, 16 Oct 2012 15:30:33 -0700 Sitting for protracted periods increases risk of diabetes, heart disease and death http://tocyekly.posterous.com/sitting-for-protracted-periods-increases-risk http://tocyekly.posterous.com/sitting-for-protracted-periods-increases-risk

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? A new study led by the University of Leicester, in association with colleagues at Loughborough University, has discovered that sitting for long periods increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and death.

The study, which combined the results of 18 studies and included a total of 794,577 participants, was led by Dr. Emma Wilmot, a research fellow in the Diabetes Research Group at the University of Leicester. The research was in collaboration with colleagues from the newly established National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit and was published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association of the Study of Diabetes.

The research showed that those who sat for long periods of time have a higher chance in their risk of diabetes, heart-disease and death. Interestingly, the results were independent of any individual physical exercise undertaken, suggesting that even if an individual meets the physical activity guidelines, their health may still be at risk if they sit for long periods of time during the day.

Dr Wilmot, a Clinical Research Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Leicester General Hospital said that on average an adult spends 50-70% of their time sitting down, by limiting the time spent sitting, the risk of diabetes, heart disease and death can be reduced.

It is important to take breaks from long periods of sitting down, such as taking a walk during your lunch break and taking a break from work at the computer by placing your laptop on a filing cabinet.

Mon, 15 Oct 2012 16:26:20 -0700 Neuroscientist: Newsweek Guy Sounds Delusional About Heaven ... http://tocyekly.posterous.com/neuroscientist-newsweek-guy-sounds-delusional http://tocyekly.posterous.com/neuroscientist-newsweek-guy-sounds-delusional Home > Science > Neuroscientist: Newsweek Guy Sounds Delusional About Heaven?Experience

If you pay attention to the Internet, you?ve probably seen commentary on the Newsweek article about heaven written by a?neurosurgeon.

-

Sam Harris, who has a PhD in?neuroscience, rips this guy (and the integrity of Newsweek) a new one.

Everything?absolutely everything?in Alexander?s account rests on repeated assertions that his visions of heaven occurred while his cerebral cortex was ?shut down,? ?inactivated,? ?completely shut down,? ?totally offline,? and ?stunned to complete inactivity.? The evidence he provides for this claim is not only inadequate?it suggests that he doesn?t know anything about the relevant brain science?

Alexander believes that his E. coli-addled brain could not have produced his visions because they were too ?intense,? too ?hyper-real,? too ?beautiful,? too ?interactive,? and too drenched in significance for even a healthy brain to conjure. He also appears to think that despite their timeless quality, his visions could not have arisen in the minutes or hours during which his cortex (which surely never went off) switched back on. He clearly knows nothing about what people with working brains experience under the influence of psychedelics.

I think what Sam Harris is saying is, ?I?ve totally done DMT.?

-

I like Sam Harris a lot. I don?t always agree with him but think his simple writing and speaking, while kind of boring, is really effective. This article is probably the most outraged I?ve ever heard his tone. Probably because the guy writing the original article is supposed to be highly educated in brain science.

Anyway, I think I?ve posted this before, but here?s a free printable poster of list of contradictions in the Bible from Sam?s website:

Tue, 22 May 2012 22:26:11 -0700 America's Small-Business Fetish - Reason.com http://tocyekly.posterous.com/america39s-small-business-fetish-reasoncom http://tocyekly.posterous.com/america39s-small-business-fetish-reasoncom

On February 12, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) sent a message to his 62,550 followers on Twitter:??Small business is the job growth engine in this country and we need to pursue policies that reflect that reality to create jobs.? Cantor was wrong on both counts. Despite overwhelming conventional wisdom to the contrary, small businesses are not the engine of growth. And the small businesses that do create jobs rarely stay small for long, which makes crafting policies that favor those fast-growing firms both difficult and unnecessary.

The cult of the small business is so prevalent that you are treated like a heretic in Washington if you don?t pledge to do something nice for the little guys. Targeted tax credits, special regulatory exemptions, preferential access to government contracts?nothing is too good for America?s DIY manufacturers and social networking startups. Support for the Small Business Administration (SBA), a federal agency tasked with handing out goodies to the modestly sized, remains strong, despite dozens of compelling studies demonstrating that its efforts amount to little more than poorly targeted corporate welfare.

In his 2011 budget, President Barack Obama requested $1.4 billion to fund SBA programs. Most of the agency?s money is spent on special credit programs for small businesses that have difficulty getting loans from regular banks. In fiscal year 2011, the SBA guaranteed $30 billion in such loans, which theoretically don?t cost taxpayers anything. In practice, however, whenever the economy goes south, the SBA can?t cope with the number of small businesses that default on the loans. In 2011 the SBA ended up spending $6.2 billion, a $4.8 billion increase over its requested amount, mainly because so many small businesses couldn?t make their payments.

The idea that small is glorious or that small businesses are the engine of growth is based on bad economics, and the result is bad policy.

The government?s definition of a small business has become absurdly broad. The category officially includes the ?mom and pop? firms with fewer than 10 employees that most people think of when they hear the term. But companies with hundreds or even thousands of employees (depending on the industry) are also eligible for benefits and other preferences; they win the coveted designation by virtue of the fact that they are small relative to other firms in their industry. Based on the federal government?s bizarre classifications, 99.7 percent of firms in America qualify as small.?

The percentage of people who work at these small companies has remained constant during the last decade, holding steady at about 50 percent of the private sector work force. This fact alone should cast doubt on the claim that small businesses account for the bulk of new jobs. If that figure was accurate, it would mean that half of American workers are employed by 0.3 percent of firms. Shouldn?t we instead be cheering the tremendous job creation record of those powerhouse companies??

The ubiquitous statistic that small businesses create 70 percent of all net new jobs is also misleading. The source of this figure is none other than the Small Business Administration itself. In a 2005 study published by the American Enterprise Institute, I noted that to arrive at this figure, the SBA divides net small business jobs?a figure that includes every single current employee of a small business?by the net job creation from all businesses combined. This is not an accurate way to determine the share of new jobs created by small businesses.

The results can be comical: One table published by the SBA in 2005 showed that small businesses created more than 100 percent of new jobs, a truly heroic (if fantastical) result. We should stop using this junk statistic.

Our national obsession with small businesses misses the point. It?s not micro-firms that drive our new, entrepreneurial economy. Young firms?the startups that will grow to be the next Facebook?do tend to be small. But their newness is the relevant factor, not their size.

A?2010 National Bureau of Economic Research paper by University of Maryland economist John Haltiwanger and researchers at the U.S. Census Bureau found there was no consistent link between net job growth rates and the size of a business. Instead, the researchers found that firms younger than 10 years, particularly startups, are the real sources of job growth.?

Another study, published the same year by economist Tim Kane of the Kauffman Foundation, came to the same conclusion after examining more than 30 years of data from the Census Bureau?s Business Dynamics Statistics. Both large and small firms?continuously create jobs, Kane found, but also continuously destroy them. The Kauffman report found that without startups?defined as firms younger than one year old?there would be no net job creation in the United States. As Kane writes in the study, ?Startups aren?t everything when it comes to job growth. They are the only thing.??

Former Obama administration economic adviser Jared Bernstein explained this concept concisely in an October 2011 New York Times op-ed. ?It?s not small businesses that matter, but new businesses, which by definition create new jobs,? Bernstein wrote. ?Real job creation, though, doesn?t kick in until those small businesses survive and grow into larger operations.??

Today, according to Haltiwanger and his co-authors, businesses younger than a year account for 3 percent of U.S. employment but almost 20 percent of new gross jobs. Furthermore, 60 percent of small businesses that have been around more than five years act as a slight drag on the number of jobs available. These older small businesses cut about 0.5 percent more staff than they add in a typical year, according to Haltiwanger.

Real job growth comes not from people dreaming of being small but from entrepreneurs committed to building large and sustainable companies. This shouldn?t be news. A seminal 1987 study by David L. Birch, a former MIT researcher, explained that small-firm job creation occurs within a relatively few firms, the ones he calls ?gazelles.? Gazelles are high-growth entrepreneurial companies that start small and quickly grow larger. This subset of small firms, not small firms in general, is the powerful job creator of every central planner?s dreams.?

Which means that even if it were the government?s role to create jobs, it wouldn?t be able to.?No one can identify a gazelle before it leaps. The label can be applied only by looking at past growth, long after the firm has created those sought-after new jobs. Since no one knows where true innovation will come from, it is impossible to accurately pinpoint the job-creating firms in advance.

Tue, 22 May 2012 20:15:20 -0700 Farmworker found guilty in S.African white extremist murder http://tocyekly.posterous.com/farmworker-found-guilty-in-safrican-white-ext http://tocyekly.posterous.com/farmworker-found-guilty-in-safrican-white-ext

A South African court convicted a black farmworker Tuesday of murdering white supremacist leader Eugene Terre'Blanche, but found the motive was financial rather than racial.

Judge John Horn rejected Chris Mahlangu's claims to have acted in self-defence and accepted the prosecution's argument that the killing had been triggered by a fight over wages.

Mahlangu's co-defendant Patrick Ndlovu, 18, who was a minor at the time of the killing, was found guilty of house-breaking but not guilty on charges of murder and robbery.

"I am not convinced that accused number two (Ndlovu) took any real or active part in the assault on the deceased," Horn said in the High Court sitting in the northwest town of Ventersdorp.

Horn last month ruled most evidence against the teenager inadmissible because police failed to follow South Africa's child protection laws in handling the case.

The 69-year-old co-founder of the farright Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) was bludgeoned to death at his farmhouse outside Ventersdorp, a small farming town, on April 3, 2010.

The pair turned themselves in after the incident.

"He was revered by some, but despised by others," said the judge, rejecting assertions that Terre'Blanche had been killed over his political views.

"According to what was put to some of the witnesses on behalf of the accused, the dispute with the deceased was about money, not about his political beliefs or aversion for black people," Horn said.

The conviction of Mahlangu, 29, was no surprise given the array of evidence against him.

The court found no proof that Terre'Blanche had sodomised Mahlangu, a claim he raised when the trial started.

"Sodomy is such a personal intrusion, I can't believe (Mahlangu) would not have raised it immediately," Horn said.

Furthermore, there was no indication that police had removed semen from Terre'Blanche's genitals after the crime.

"There was no earthly reason for them to lay their careers on the line to act in such manner. They had nothing to gain. It simply does not make sense," he said.

Outside the court a small group of AWB members displaying the movement's red flags with a swastika-like emblem were gathered.

Posters with Terre'Blanche's face hung on trees, with slogans like "We Want Justice" and "Stop Farm Murders".

Supporters of the accused pair sang the song "Shoot the white farmer" -- an apartheid-era rallying cry that was banned last year -- outside the court, with some carrying placards reading "Down with the AWB".

Heavily armed police guarded the court, with a large group of local and foreign journalists moving in the area cordoned off outside the building.

"We are pleased with the judgement, it was extremely comprehensive," said Norman Arendse, Ndlovu's lawyer.

"It has been a rollercoster ride. There was a time when we thought he was going to be convicted" of murder by association, he said.

A visibly angry Terre'Blanche family spokesman said they were not happy that the teenager escaped the murder conviction.

"From the family, we are totally unhappy that the boy has not been found guilty," said Andre Niebaner.

The killing confronted South Africa with memories of its dark apartheid past, but during the long proceedings the trial has largely faded from public debate.

The trial instead cast yet another light on South Africa's staggering incidence of violent crime, which farmers say is especially severe on their land. Commercial farms are still mostly in white hands 18 years after the end of apartheid.

Sentencing is expected on June 18.

So.cl doesn't appear to be a direct challenge to established social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.
