The addition solution is the answer to our puzzle. | Way of Cats blog

With the best of intentions, I started out having dinner with one friend and wound up having dinner with two other friends. So I wound up chatting with a couple who I had not seen in a while.

The husband, previously unaware of my Cat Guru skills, wanted to know what I thought of their own cat situation. As outlined, they had an older cat who had been abandoned, twice at least, before they adopted her. In an attempt to get her a friend, they got a wonderfully sweet and social kitten; whose overtures were rudely rebuffed.

Now both cats disliked each other. The husband wanted to know how to ?engineer? these two cats to fit together.

He?s a smart man who likes to figure things out. Instead of answering him, I shared my own knowledge of what was going on. Independently, he saw where the problem was going to be solved, even though (to his chagrin) it was the answer his wife had been urging upon him.

That?s right, my favorite advice!

The solution to your cat problem is more cats.

Sometimes, it is that simple.

The older cat was not grasping the friendship gestures of the younger cat. If the older cat could see how such offers were made and accepted, that might help. Getting another cat who would be friends with the young cat would model such behavior. The young cat would get the kittenhood that had been curtailed by the lack of cooperation from the older cat.

Last but not least, three cats and two people would wind up happier.

While If I can?t get the thing I want, I?ll change to not want it any more is a workable philosophy, we cannot flip that coin for the same success. Deciding the easiest solution to not providing what someone needs is to convince them that they don?t need it, after all; this is an endeavor doomed to failure.

We cannot problem-solve by trying to change the part of the equation that is the least amenable.

Understanding how another cat will fix things is a difficult bridge to cross when it seems so counter-intuitive. When the problems is seen as ?two cats? we tend to think subtraction will be the right answer. But we can?t take away these two cats? troubles. Their people liked both cats.

I don?t know what the final decision will be. But, at least, one other person has grasped the beauty of The Addition Solution.

Showing I?m not a ?crazy? cat lady, after all.
